About the event

Join us for an engaging 2-hour virtual workshop designed to empower you with the resources needed to teach the California Indian Genocide in your classroom. In this eye-opening session, Native scholars will provide you with tools to teach the Gold Rush and westward expansion with cultural sensitivity and historical accuracy. This session is appropriate for teachers grades 8-12+.

How you will grow:

  1. Integrate Indigenous Perspectives: Discover strategies for incorporating Indigenous voices, experiences, and perspectives into your social sciences curriculum.
  2. Uncover Hidden Histories: Gain access to previously silenced historical accounts, primary sources, and educational materials that illuminate the California Gold Rush period.
  3. Promote Empathy and Understanding: Learn effective teaching approaches and activities that foster empathy, critical thinking, and respectful dialogue among students.
  4. Cultivate Resilience and Healing: Explore resources and initiatives that support the healing and resilience of Native communities.
  5. Address Contemporary Issues: Understand the ongoing implications of the California Indian Genocide in present-day Native communities, and explore how to address related social justice issues with sensitivity and relevance.

How it works:

  • Interactive sessions and Q&A opportunities
  • Engage directly with our free online curriculum
  • Seek guidance on implementing the learned strategies in your own teaching practice
